Find out why ChatGPT misses your SaaS

Separate a missing mention from an uncited page or crawler problem before choosing your next search fix.

The short version

  • A SaaS product missing from one ChatGPT answer is a sampled absence. It does not establish that the website was never crawled.
  • Record mentions, owned citations, recommendations, and description accuracy separately, with the question, settings, date, and saved answer.
  • Check search-crawler permissions and the priority page, then choose a repair supported by the evidence you have.
  • Google indexing evidence describes Google. It does not establish ChatGPT's crawler activity or the cause of a missing mention.

When your SaaS product is missing from a ChatGPT answer, start by identifying what is missing. The answer might omit your name, mention the product without linking to your site, or describe it incorrectly. None of those observations alone proves that a crawler couldn’t reach your pages.

For a founder deciding what to fix, the next step is a small evidence record. Save the question and answer, inspect the sources, and check the relevant public page. That gives you a reason to improve a page, investigate access, or keep collecting evidence before spending on a larger program.

What does missing mean?

Separate the outcomes. A mention means the answer names the product. An owned citation links to a URL you’ve verified belongs to the business. A recommendation suggests the product for the stated need. Description accuracy concerns whether its claims match current product facts.

You can have one without the others. A name in an answer isn’t necessarily a recommendation, and a citation to a third-party review isn’t an owned-site citation. A request that fails or can’t search is unavailable data, not a completed answer with zero mentions.

ChatGPT search can show citations and a Sources panel. The platform also warns that results can be incomplete or incorrect. Open the source before treating its link as support for the answer’s product claim.

Write down which question you’re testing. A branded question can help inspect how the product is described. An unbranded buying question can inspect discovery. Neither automatically establishes how often buyers ask that question inside the app.

What should you save before changing anything?

Keep one row per attempt. Record the exact question, platform and surface, time, locale, visible model and search settings, and the response evidence. Note memory or other relevant personalization settings you can inspect. Redact private information before sharing the record.

Use these fields to separate the observation from your interpretation:

  • Run status. Completed, failed, or missing; note an unavailable response as missing.
  • Mention. Product named or absent in the completed answer.
  • Owned citation. Verified owned URL linked or absent.
  • Recommendation. Product suggested for the stated need or not suggested.
  • Accuracy. Checked claim, supporting product fact, and any mismatch.
  • Next check. The source or page needed to investigate the finding.

Don’t combine those fields into an unexplained authority score. Keep the number of completed checks beside any count or percentage, and list failures separately. A small panel describes those sampled answers, not whole-market share.

The AI visibility baseline kit provides a place to organize the starting checks. If you need a diagnostic and implemented repairs handled, what an AI search audit should deliver explains the handoff to ask for.

Can the search crawler reach the page?

Check the service you intend to allow. OpenAI documents separate search, training, and user-triggered agents. OAI-SearchBot serves search discovery, GPTBot concerns potential training use, and ChatGPT-User handles certain user-triggered visits. Allowing one doesn’t establish the policy for the others.

Ask the website owner to inspect robots rules, host or firewall behavior, and requests from the published searchbot IP ranges. Preserve the company’s training and security choices. A search-access investigation isn’t a reason to switch every bot permission to allow.

Then inspect the priority URL. Does it return the intended public page? Can a visitor read the product facts without a login? Do its canonical, redirects, and internal links point to the intended destination? Record the specific check that failed instead of calling the entire site invisible.

A successful browser fetch proves that fetch. A crawler visit, where verified logs are available, proves the recorded visit. Neither establishes that an answer will mention the product. ChatGPT’s website-inclusion guidance says placement isn’t guaranteed.

What can indexing evidence tell you?

Google separates crawling, indexing, and serving a result. A discovered URL doesn’t necessarily reach the later stages. Search Console can provide useful page-specific evidence, but that evidence belongs to Google’s system.

Our October 9, 2026, inspection recorded JAC’s monthly search page and full search guide as unknown to Google, with no last crawl. Live tests showed both could be indexed, and indexing requests for both were accepted into the priority crawl queue.

That was a Google observation. It didn’t establish ChatGPT crawler activity, an AI answer result, or a cause for a missing citation. An accepted indexing request also wasn’t proof that crawling or indexing had completed. The JAC AI search experiment keeps the dated observation separate from later checks.

For Google AI features, the current eligibility guidance requires indexing and snippet eligibility, plus inclusion through Search Console’s Search generative AI control. Meeting those requirements doesn’t guarantee appearance. These are Google checks, not a universal checklist for every assistant.

Which repair does the evidence support?

Choose the smallest repair connected to a verified problem. If an intended public page is blocked, investigate the access obstacle. If the product page omits an important limitation, add the verified fact. If a cited directory is outdated, prepare an accurate correction request for its owner.

Those are different jobs. Rewriting a headline won’t fix a blocked request, and changing crawler permissions won’t supply a missing integration detail. For broader page work, the search and SEO manual connects buyer questions to accurate pages and technical checks.

Native reporting can add context without replacing the saved answers. Bing AI Performance reports aggregated citation activity. Its counts don’t establish placement or a page’s role in an individual answer, and they aren’t a complete view of every ChatGPT response.

The AI search overview connects these checks to buyer research and useful pages. Record the changed URL, completion check, and date. Repeat the question under comparable conditions, and preserve an unchanged or unavailable result. A shipped repair and a later mention are separate facts; one doesn’t prove the other caused it.

Start with one saved answer and one priority page. If recurring page improvements and reporting are what you need, AI Search & SEO can start directly. The optional AI Audit is a one-time assessment with agreed fixes. You can book a call to discuss the evidence and scope without purchasing the audit first.
